Orientation and training for tutors new to the Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne
About this Event

Welcome to the Faculty of Arts!

ATI and invited guests look forward to joining you for this orientation and training event.

Arts Foundations comprises:

  • A half-day of workshops (3 hours), with built-in chances to connect with informal mentors and with each other
  • A set of online modules completed via Canvas, the University’s LMS (4 hours)
  • Access to the Faculty Sharepoint induction platform

The program provides:

  • Theoretical bases for the Faculty's preferred approaches to teaching
  • A repertoire of classroom activities that are inclusive and engaging and attuned to student wellbeing
  • Information about your role and responsibilities
  • Your key administrative and support contacts
  • Networking and community-building support

As a condition of employment, all sessional teaching staff new to the Faculty of Arts must complete Arts Foundations, a face-to-face training workshop complemented by online induction modules.

Training runs in the week prior to the commencement of teaching and its completion during this time is compulsory. Staff will not be able to proceed to teaching if this training is not completed. Attending the face-to-face component of training in Orientation Week is required, in line with the requirement to attend campus for the delivery of teaching.

Participation in Arts Foundations is paid upon completion, in accordance with the Faculty’s Local Operating Rule, to an estimated total of seven hours at the Other Casual Academic Activity, Level A.2 or Level A.6 (PhD) rate.

Arts Foundations is created and convened by specialists from Arts Teaching Innovation (ATI). ATI fosters teaching innovation across the Faculty’s five Schools with a focus on active-learning strategies, technologies for teaching, professional-development initiatives, pedagogical research, and community partnerships.
