More about the artists:
Dasha Podoltseva
Dasha is a visual artist and graphic designer. During her research, she has been exploring the lost scapes around Newcastle as a result of the city's transformation, particularly its industrial and abandoned spaces and their shifting functionality. Recently in Ukraine she developed an extensive project with the composer Alexey Shmurak scrutinising the loss of public space, and in particular beaches, as a result of Russia’s invasion. She salvaged sandbags used to protect urban areas from bombings to construct miniature scapes, reflecting on the changing nature of once familiar and safe spaces.
Oleksandr Sirous
Oleksandr is a sound and new media artist whose work explores game mechanics and socio-political themes and is inspired by comic books and video game culture. He works with web environments, big data sets, complex simulation and AI. Oleksandr is a member of the Ukrainian artist collective Photinus Studio, which supports the development of new media art through exhibitions, residencies and educational events. Recently he has been mapping environmental issues surrounding wetlands in Ukraine - and is extending this research to waterways in and around Newcastle.
