We have two assignments for the November 11 meeting: To write an artist statement, come up with a question for Nancy Clark, and for the meeting each person will have a choice of going over our statement or talking about how we got where we are.

In September, Artists Mentoring Artists, met to talk about items important for submissions: Writing Artist Statements, Bio’s, and CVs. We came away from the evening with two assignments, the first- To write an artist statement.
An artist’s statement is a personal, written description of your art in your own words. The statement is brief, perhaps a short paragraph or two, written in the first person that provides context and insight into your art, helping viewers, curators, and grant panels better understand the artwork's meaning, intentions, and inspirations. An artist statement can be about a single piece, a collection, or the artist's entire body of work and is different from an artist bio, which focuses on career and background.
The second assignment is; To think up a question about art.
This assignment comes from Spirit Lake Arts member, Nancy Clark, who is also a member of an international studio art quilt organization. The organization asked her to present quilt art questions to their organization, questions in a variety of topics. The premise behind our assignment, is that quilters and artists are not far apart, both creating artworks, both having, inspirations, aspirations and following a process. Here’s a sample of a question, offered by Roberta Condon to Nancy- “If artists are visual story tellers, what story would you tell?”
Have you ever wanted your art practice to be more than what it is? Many artists feel that way. Artists Mentoring Artists will help identify where you are now, and where you would like your art practice to go.
We meet Tuesday Nov 11, 6:30-8:30pm, Ringling House Bed & Breakfast, remember to park on the street. One doesn’t need to be a member of Spirit Lake Arts to attend the mentoring program. Join us at the bi-monthly support group moderated by professional artists based on simple, attainable goal setting and accountability.
