Join us for an enlightening evening of creative insight at our 'Artists in Conversation' event! We are delighted to host three distinguished professional artists (David Hinchliffe, Daniel Butterworth, Deb Mostert) who will engage in a dynamic dialogue about their artistic journeys, inspirations, and creative processes and how they’ve built their art business. All three artists are in town thanks to UniSQ School of Creative Arts, McGregor Winter Art Workshops. They have generously given up their time to share with us at the gallery and we are so grateful and looking forward to these in-depth conversations.

This interactive session offers a unique opportunity to delve into the minds of these accomplished artists as they share their experiences and explore the evolving landscape of the art business world. Whether you're an art enthusiast, a budding artist, or simply curious about the artistic process, this event promises to be both engaging and enriching.

As part of the conversation, attendees will have the chance to pose questions to the artists, gaining firsthand knowledge and perspectives directly from the creators themselves. From insights into technique and style to reflections on the role of art in society and how to make a sustainable art business.

Don't miss this rare chance to connect with three prominent figures in Australian Art and discover the stories behind the artist. Reserve your seat today and be a part of this inspiring exchange of ideas and creativity at Margaret Street Gallery.

About the Artists

David Hinchliffe –

David Hinchliffe has had a highly successful painting career spanning over 50 years, With more than 100 solo exhibitions including paintings, sculpture and photographs in locations around the world, he is represented by 13 galleries and dealers in London, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney and Perth.
His painting style has been described as “contemporary impressionism”. His subjects are principally streetscapes, landscapes and figurative work.
David has a unique painting process which he shares at workshops around the world. He paints from dark to light, creating figures and form by painting negative space. While he worked for most of his career in oils, he changed to acrylics 6 years ago.
He has expanded his art teaching program including online workshops through Mastrius https://www.mastrius.com/david-hinchliffe-mentorship/ as well as in-person workshops.
David believes anyone can paint if they have the right attitude and learn the ‘tricks’ of art.“Painting is magic. All magic is more or less trickery and I firmly believe anyone can learn it. The key is attitude and persistence,” he says.
David has been painting, exhibiting and selling his work in galleries since the age of 12. He has won numerous competitions as a young artist (Sunday Mail Art Prize, ABC Argonauts Award, Atlantic City Sculpture Award, Gemini prize).
David has travelled and painted widely in Australia, US, UK, Europe, Bali, Sri Lanka, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore. He has conducted numerous workshops in Australia, Europe, Asia and the US.

Deb Mostert –

Deb Mostert has used sketchbooks over the decades as a scaffold for her contemporary art practice. A Sketchbook Practice shares pages from over ninety sketchbooks dating back twenty years to prompt: ‘What does it mean to keep a sketchbook?’ and ‘How does your perception of the world change through keeping one?’. In the words of the artist: “Sketchbooks serve as a spare brain, a record of my personality and my growth and they are gleefully imperfect.”

Shown alongside Deb’s sketchbooks are those from artists local to the Somerset region. This collection of community sketchbooks displays both the depth and diversity of local artists, but also the day-to-day character of the region.

Her art practice is 30 years young and involves drawing, painting and some sculpture.

Deb thinks the privilege and burden to make something of what she see’s and share it with others, has grown in urgency in more recent times. In these uncertain days she hopes to make work that demonstrates that beauty, grace and truth continue. Deb continues to searching for ways to talk about these themes using gentle, offbeat narratives and a crisp aesthetic.

Daniel Butterworth –

Using his own image as his primary subject matter, Daniel taps in to a unique political and social commentary.

After painting with oils for most of his career, he recently switched to house paints, allowing for much more freedom and spontaneity in his work.

This medium showcases the speed of his brush strokes to indicate movement with the figure.

With a multitude of different colours making up the tonal values and the use of the cardboard markings and paint dribbles, his works show strength, uniqueness and a rawness within.

Having started his working life as a sign-writer, Dan later completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Latrobe University and has been a practising artist for more than 20 years.

Dan works from his studio in Kyneton, Victoria.

With numerous solo and group exhibitions to his name, along with selection as a finalist in a large number of high profile portrait prizes, Daniel is now in demand as a guest artist and teacher in Australia.

Dan opened the 2016 Archibald exhibition in Ballarat and has accomplished many commissions, including several of TV personality and comedian Shane Jacobson.
