About this Event
Massive Earthquakes and Tsunamis in the Noto Region
On January 1, 2024, A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. Over 200 people died and more than 20,000 families suffered housing damage or lost their homes caused by Tsunamis and more than 1,500 aftershocks followed the main shock.
The earthquake and tsunami also damaged national treasures, important cultural properties, historic sites, natural monuments of scenic beauty, and other items designated as national, world, or Japanese heritage.
In response to the unprecedented massive scale of natural disasters, THE BRICKS NYC will be gathering with many diligent musicians and artists based in and around New York City on April 12 and 13 to hold concerts, an exhibition with silent auctions, and a Japanese tea ceremony experience event as well as opening pop-up stores to raise funds to support cultural reconstruction for the arts and music.
About TAYA Wajima Lacquerware Store
TAYA Wajima Lacquerware Store is based in Wajima-city in the Noto region. Since their store was destroyed by the unprecedented massive earthquake, they are not sure how long it will take to rebuild, and the cost of the reconstruction will be beyond our imagination.
About Exhibition and Sales Event
Although the earthquake destroyed their building and storefront, some of Wajima lacquerware stored in TAYA Lacqureware Store miraculously survived the disaster. Those luckily survived Urushi lacquerware will be exhibited and sold in our hosting event as part of THE BRICKS NYC Disaster Relief Fundraiser.
This is a rare and one-time opportunity to see the traditional Wajima-nuri Urushi Lacquerwares in New York City. Please feel free to come to see the lacquerware as well as the fundraising art exhibition and pop-up store.
All proceeds from the purchase of Wajima-nuri lacquerware will go directly to the TAYA Lacquerware Store to support their reconstruction process. Besides, partial proceeds from these sales will be donated to the “Ishikawa Band Association” to support children and students' brass band education and activities in the Noto region as well as “GBFund” to help restore/repair artworks and historical cultural properties.
