Frida Kahlo’s garden at the Casa Azul garden was one of several important private gardens in twentieth-century Mexico designed by or for major artists and architects. This talk will consider Kahlo’s garden in relation to those of Juan O’Gorman, Luis Barragán, and Edward James and explore some of the ways painting, photography, and architecture intersected in these extraordinary private landscapes. ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Kathryn E. O’Rourke, Ph.D., is a historian of modern architecture and professor of art history at Trinity University. She is the author of Modern Architecture in Mexico City: History, Representation, and the Shaping of a Capital (2016) and the editor of O’Neil Ford on Architecture (2019). Her current book project is Archaism and Humanism in Modern Architecture. She sits on the Visiting Committee on Latin American Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art, and is a founder and the president of Design|Forum, a San Antonio non-profit. She authored “Gardens and Landscapes of Frida Kahlo’s Mexico City” in Frida Kahlo’s Garden published by The New York Botanical Garden.
