Throughout the workshop, Jan will share inspiring examples from master artists, offering insight into their unique methods, tools, and materials. You’ll discover where to access valuable ongoing information and instruction to continue growing your skills after the workshop. By the end, you’ll have created a beautiful coloured pencil artwork that demonstrates the incredible depth and detail possible with this medium—something you may have thought was impossible!
This workshop is designed with beginners in mind, but artists of all skill levels are welcome. Whether you're just starting out or have some experience with coloured pencils, Jan’s extensive knowledge of the medium will provide you with a wealth of techniques, tips, and creative inspiration. She will work with each participant individually, helping you refine your technique and encouraging your artistic growth. You'll leave the workshop with not only a completed artwork but also a newfound confidence and passion for using coloured pencils in fine art.

WHAT TO BRING.
Your colour pencil collection: You will need a large range of colours in a professional brand, at least 36, but the more the better! Recommended brands are Sanford Prismacolor or Faber- Castell’s Polychromos or Albrecht Durer varieties; OR: Derwent Coloursoft; and Caran d’Ache Luminance Pablo or Supracolor. But do avoid any children’s or student’s coloured pencils or you will end up very frustrated with their limited potential. (Pencils may be water soluble.) If available, also buy a Prismacolor Colourless Blender.
Graphite (lead) Pencil- B or 2B; Kneadable eraser; Masking tape; Ruler; Scissors
Sharpener – I recommend the desk-type rotary sharpeners. (Avoid the ones with a suction cup on the bottom.) They cost about $20-$50 but are well worth the expense. Otherwise, the small, all metal sharpeners will do. Buy the pencils first and then check that they will fit the holes in the sharpener. (The Derwent pencils, for example, will not fit all sharpeners.) Jan will bring some to share.
An A4 sheet of graphite transfer paper. (Not carbon paper!)
Drawing board – eg, an MDF board or ‘Gator Board’ or similar, (must be smooth!) Bring along something to prop up one end of the board so that you can work with the board slanted upwards.
New soft- bristle brush – 2” wide or larger. For brushing away pencil crumbs.
A ‘dud’ photograph or transparency - For using under your drawing hand to prevent smudging your work.
Paper: Any good quality drawing paper will work well with coloured pencils if its weight is at least 180 gsm. I also recommend Mi-Tientes pastel paper or Pastelmat as a coloured paper, but choose a neutral grey, cream or brown. Hot pressed watercolour paper is also great to work on, as is some printmaking papers and illustration boards. Stonehenge paper is also recommended. Any slick or shiny paper is not suitable. You will need two or more A4 sheets of white and perhaps one A4 sheet of coloured paper for the workshop.
Optional extras : –Battery operated eraser. Pencil extenders.
Jan will supply the references for this workshop but you are welcome to bring any favourite copyright-free image of your choosing, along with a photocopy for transferring. Keep it simple though as colour pencil art is very slow!
