Join SCAD Museum of Art exhibiting artists Anthony Olubunmi Akinbola and Monira Al Qadiri for two artist talks expounding on their newly opened solo exhibitions. The artists will speak on the powerful impact of cultural influences on their multifaceted practices. Akinbola, whose works repurpose Black hair care products, will discuss the intersections of commodities and their broader sociopolitical implications on Black individuation, joy, and life. Al Qadiri will explicate the mythology, history, and natural forces of the Rub’ al Khali desert that inform her work Holy Quarter.
About the artists
Monira Al Qadiri (b. 1983; lives and works in Berlin) is a Kuwaiti visual artist born in Senegal and educated in Japan. Spanning sculpture, installation, film, and performance, Al Qadiri’s multifaceted practice is based on research into the cultural histories of the Gulf region. Her speculative scenarios take inspiration from science fiction, autobiography, traditional practices, and pop culture, resulting in uncanny and covertly subversive works that destabilize mythologies of statecraft and modernization as well as traditional notions of gender. Al Qadiri has participated in numerous collective exhibitions and international biennials and triennials. She has held solo exhibitions at UCCA Dune, China; Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria; the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain; Blaffer Art Museum, Houston, Tex.; Haus der Kunst, Munich; Kunstverein Göttingen, Germany; CIRCL Pavilion, Amsterdam; Sursock Museum, Beirut; Gasworks, London; Stroom Den Haag, the Hague; and Sultan Gallery, Kuwait.
Anthony Olubunmi Akinbola (b. 1991, Mo.; lives and works in New York) is a first-generation American of Nigerian descent, raised in both the U.S. and Nigeria. He received his B.A. in communications and media from SUNY Purchase College. Akinbola has presented solo exhibitions at Sean Kelly, New York; Night Gallery, Los Angeles; Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna; Carbon 12, Dubai; John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, Wisc.; and the Queens Museum, New York. His work has been featured in group shows at the Baltimore Museum of Art; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Hauser & Wirth, New York and Los Angeles; Pace Gallery, New York; and Bernard A. Zuckerman Museum of Art, Kennesaw, Ga., among others. Akinbola’s work is held in the Guggenheim Museum’s permanent collection and the Zabludowicz Collection, London.
This event is free and open to the public.
