Join us for an artist talk with Kingsville, Texas-based artist; Santa Barraza. Barraza’s artwork emphasizes the female visual manifestation, archetypes, of the identity and hybridization of a people at the borderlands. Doña Marina— Malinche, experienced this actuality during the encounter, invasion, and conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards in 1519. Historically she has been denoted not only as a traitor, but also as the mother of "mestizaje" (hybridization), the blending of the European and American Indigenous. The artwork reflects the strength and perseverance of women at the borderlands as they attempt to survive culturally, spiritually, and historically in an environment of contradictions.
Barraza's artwork will be on view in the "Traitor, Survivor, Icon: The Legacy of La Malinche" exhibition.
