Join us for an Artist Talk with Teake Zuidema and learn more about his exhibition, "Living on the Edge," on display in The Ellis Gallery at ARTS Southeast through October 18, 2025. We're pleased to also host Anne Lindsay, Associate Director of Education at UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant, who will give an introduction and speak about the ecological aspects featured in this important photographic work.
About the Exhibition
Living on the Edge features large panoramas that build upon Dutch photographer Teake Zuidema’s fascination with coastal locations where the forest turns abruptly into marsh, creek, beach, or sea. Zuidema identifies with the oaks, cabbage palms, cedars and cypresses, and honors them as dramatic characters involved in heroic battles that, sooner or later, will push them over the final edge between life and death. As an immigrant and a newcomer to the coastal area, this project has also been a way for Zuidema to make the coast his home.
About the Artist
During his study at the Free University (VU) of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Zuidema specialized in the use of film and photography in ethnographic research and made films and photo documentaries in the Netherlands, Mexico and Central America. After receiving a master's degree in cultural anthropology, he became a freelance photographer. Zuidema has worked all over the world for the Dutch photo agency ANP (Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau) and for international newspapers and magazines. His work has been published in the National Geographic Traveler, The Guardian, GEO and many other publications. Since moving to Savannah in 2021, he has focused on photographing the landscapes of the Georgia and South Carolina coasts. Zuidema’s work in Living on the Edge is supported by the University of Georgia Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant’s Artists, Writers and Scholars (AWS) program.
