About this Event

Join Renata-Pari Lewis in conversation with Christopher Allen, art historian and critic, about Pari-Lewis's latest exhibition 'What I have held'. The talk will take place at Nanda\Hobbs on Thursday 20 June, 6pm (for 6.30pm start).

In ‘What I Have Held’, Renata Pari-Lewis continues her ongoing fascination with the interior, responding to the experience of feeling confined and restricted by the domestic space—the trap of motherhood appearing in the repetition of mundane tasks, sapping inspiration. By reimagining these domestic sites, she transforms a trap into a series of reconnections, exploring her identity and shifting perspective in defiance of the mundane.

She challenges the location of the subject in order to invite a dialogue with the past. Where is the boundary between their physical self, their interior, and the objects they put in it?

These settings refer back, almost nostalgically, to her European past—the ambiguity, impermanence, imagination of her heritage. These places are far away, temporally and geographically, and yet so recognisable. They blur into our present, but as relics that can still evoke strong emotional ties to the past. An imaginarium of origins and stories, values and meanings that are simultaneously real and unreal.

Pari-Lewis sees interiors as linked to the rich tradition of theatre and stage. Not at all concerned with modes of interior design; she uses the concept of the set to load each depiction of an interior with the drama that has played out there, the drama that is yet to unfold.

The objects in these works are connected to everything else—the boundaries disturbed, fragmented or altogether dissolved. The thresholds of objects are often erased or redefined, movable and indefinite. She captures this feeling of uncertainty and ambiguity, a constant questioning without seeking answers.

'What I have held' opens on Thursday 13 June, 6-8pm. The exhibition will be on show until Saturday 29 June.
