The Other Side of the Tracks, Ogden Contemporary Art’s newest exhibition, asks us to think critically about the history of our railways: who built them, who they have served, who they’ve neglected, and who they have hurt. By highlighting and centering the work of contemporary Chinese American, Native American, African American, and Mexican art-makers—The Other Side of the Tracks presents a powerful vision of the railway from perspectives Americans have rarely experienced before. Join us in the Lecture room 143 on the first floor of the Kimball Visual Arts Center as we hear from two of the exhibiting artists. Award-winning author and poet Paisley Rekdal will read from her work West: A Translation, exploring what unites and divides America, drawing a powerful, necessary connection between the completion of the transcontinental railroad and the Chinese Exclusion Act. Internationally acclaimed artist Zhi Lin explores the experiences of 19th century Chinese railway workers through his deeply moving drawings, paintings, videos and installations documenting the histories of individual workers and geography of the Transcontinental Railway. Following Rekdal's reading and Lin's presentation, The Other Side of the Tracks exhibition curator Jorge Rojas will moderate a conversation. Q&A to follow.
