Studios Inc hosts an Artist Talk with resident artist Harold Smith on Saturday, November 9th at noon. Smith will give remarks on his solo exhibition, "Dr. Blackenstein's Black Shack of Arts and Sciences". From the artist:
I am honored and humbled to present "Dr. Blackenstein's Black Shack of Arts and Sciences", a multidisciplinary exhibition that explores postmodern black culture and the special flavor it adds to the stew of Americana.
Through multimedia altars with QR codes for audio commentary, I present twelve stories ranging from the hilarious to the tragic, but all bathed in "Blacktacularity".
Installed as a relaxing lounge, inspired by gatherings of black artists at Georgia Douglas Johnson's S-Street Salon during the Harlem Renaissance, viewers are invited to not only view the exhibition but relax, read, meditate, and use the exhibition hall as a "safe space" for the mind and soul.
Saturday afternoon programming includes a range of entertaining and informative activities such as poetry readings, film discussions, a concert of Negro spirituals, a two-step dance event, and much more.
