Matter Studio Gallery is honored to present Eva Montealegre in her solo exhibit, titled Deep Matter here in the Gallery. In this exhibit, Montealegre takes us on a journey, a journey through space movement from the macro to the micro, suggesting flight into or out of this space and dimension.
In a review by the insightful, highly regarded and renowned critic Shana Nys Dambrot writes, “In the heartily textured, expressively drawn, chromatically saturated abstractions by Eva Montealegre, the artist’s own process of self-discovery plays out in organic, macro/micro shapes and patterns that don’t so much communicate her hard-won insights as offer local evidence of the journey. Pondering interconnectedness from the cell to the star, light waves and brain waves, archetypes of the individual psyche and collective unconscious, along with natural and culturally-activated principles of color, she also draws parallels between the sinewy body and the undulating oceans, tracing energy fields and fractal musicality as one among many ways to understand what life is.

From the Artist: Eva Montealegre:
“I explore with the idea of mindful improvisation re: healing and trauma, which is central to my practice---the idea is to imbue these paintings with color, texture and form to speak to the joy of healing and moving through issues. My intention is to evoke the haunting quality of meaningful memories and direct my work with the concept of reclaiming buried treasure and transmuting the energy into a life giving, nurturing, release. As if underwater in a primal life burbling process and then there is resurfacing with new breath, freedom and movement and joyful expression.”
