Local photographer and MSU student Kubsam Daniel is proud to announce the opening of “Unlikely Beauty”, a solo photography exhibition at the Taube Museum of Art from September 9 to October 9, 2025. This exhibition features a compelling series of photographs documenting Gauraka (G-town), a small town in Niger State, Nigeria, through portraiture, landscape, and street photography. This work goes beyond capturing the physical appearance of this town to capturing the true essence of the town as his bond with it grew.
“Can a place be both familiar and foreign?” Asks Kubsam, whose work invites viewers to rediscover the overlooked beauty in their surroundings. This work is also a response to the question: How do we experience the true beauty of a place? Kubsam presents a cohesive series of photographic prints, some in color (30) and others in monochrome (15), that reveal beauty in the ordinary of G-town.
“I lived in a small town for seven years, yet it remained strangely distant, a place I knew but felt disconnected from. Time and familiarity tricked me into believing that my bond with it had grown, when, in truth, there was none.
With intentional exploration and a curious mind, this once void space reclaimed its meaning. All that once felt ordinary in this town now came alive. That feeling of being stuck melted away, and the desire to leave was now replaced with a sense of gratitude”.

Artist Bio:
Originally from Nigeria, Kubsam moved to the US with his family in 2022. He is currently enrolled as a student at Minot State University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a minor in Data Science and a concentration in Photography. What started as a hobby with his smartphone has become a passionate exploration of digital and darkroom photography. His work has been recognized multiple times at the Minot State Juried Student Art Show, where he received the Stander Family Photography Award in 2023, the Best Show Award in 2024, and a Merit Award in 2025. When he is not working, Kubsam enjoys exploring new hobbies and shooting hoops.
