Richard has been painting and drawing for over 50 years in a variety of media including oil pastel, oil paints, pen and ink, and pencil. He is self-taught as an artist. He largely put aside his painting in his 20’s to qualify and practice as a successful international architect. Since retiring from architecture in 2012, Richard concentrated on developing further as a fine artist. He went back to medium that he felt he could develop most successfully - oil pastels - working from his small, custom-built studio in Stockwell, London.
Starting from his visits to a wide range of Cities around the World, he developed a series of rooftop views which enabled him to bring together his love and understanding of city forms with his skills as an oil pastel artist. Commissions arose in the UK and the Middle East after his first successful solo exhibition in 2015 on specific city subjects.
He applied for membership of the UK Pastel Society in 2017 and was accepted. Since then, he has been working primarily in oil pastels. He joined the Pastel Society Council in 2019 and was made President of the Pastel Society in October 2021.He exhibits at the Mall Galleries in London annually with the Pastel Society and has had a number of solo shows in recent years at venues such as the RAC in London.
He has contributed to a number of publications on pastel painting over the last few years both in Britain and Internationally and teaches pastel techniques in a variety of workshops in the UK.
