“Backward I see in my own days where I sweated through fog with linguists and contenders, I have no mockings or arguments, I witness and wait.” – Walt Whitman, Song of Myself, 4
Posters occupy a weird space in the art world. Though mass-produced, they are also ephemeral by design, rarely preserved and soon forgotten. The artists and designers behind them often go uncredited for their hard work. And yet—envision the poster for Jaws, designed by Roger Kastel. Or Otto Preminger’s Anatomy of a M**der, by Saul Bass. Or Wes Wilson’s iconic show posters for The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and many more. These are treasured works of art and design that have helped shape generations of our collective visual culture.
Witness and Wait is the debut solo exhibition of Brooklyn-based graphic designer, calligrapher, and artist Eric Benoit. A collection of vibrant posters and original calligraphy addressing everything from the daily challenges of life, to the exploration of the self, to the existential threats we face as a species, the show covers work created between 2022–24. In particular, Benoit’s new collection of calligraphy-focused posters will be displayed as a full set for the first time.
In addition to the first-run posters and original calligraphy on display and available for sale, the opening will include live calligraphy performed by Benoit throughout the event. Reserve a spot in advance or sign up during the opening to have a name or other meaningful word drawn in a beautiful blackletter style using a specialty ink selected specifically to ring in the autumn.
Artist Bio:
Eric Benoit is a Brooklyn-based graphic designer and fine artist who works primarily in 2D design, calligraphy, lettering, typography, and branding across print and digital media. He creates personal, resonant artwork through the medium of design.
By using a combination of historical design tradition and modern digital design methods, he creates compelling images that aren’t fixed to a particular time, place, or style. In this way, his own voice shines through all of his work, regardless of the content represented.
Beverages will be provided
