Stop by the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge's John D. Dingell Jr. Visitor Center any time between 11 AM - 3 PM to check out the Artist Display for free!
During Shawn Stachel's upcoming demonstration, he will showcase the process of chiseling and painting handcrafted wooden fish, starting from a raw log and transforming it into a unique, one-of-a-kind piece of art. Visitors will be able to observe each step of this fascinating process and gain a deeper understanding of Stachel’s craftsmanship. Several finished wooden fish will also be on display, allowing viewers to appreciate the intricate details and artistry involved in his work.
Stachel, a native of Downriver, Michigan, has always been deeply connected to the world of art and craftsmanship. Growing up in a home that fostered creativity from an early age, Stachel was encouraged to explore his artistic talents. As a child, he would often draw and paint late into the night, and if there was ever a moment of boredom, the answer was simple – create something. His father, an accomplished woodworker and designer, was a significant influence, offering him the chance to learn and experiment with his craft. His mother, a painter, further nurtured his creativity, along with that of his siblings.
Shawn’s work is informed by his love for nature and the world around him. Inspired by his travels to South America, Mexico, Costa Rica, Wyoming, and Lake Tahoe, California, he draws from the beauty of mountains, the ocean, and animals. In addition, the work of a select few successful international artists has also shaped his creative vision.
