About the Exhibition:
The Guild of Boston Artists is proud to present "The Here & Now", a solo spotlight exhibition of oil landscapes by Sam Vokey at its Newbury Street Gallery from November 1- 29. A satisfying cross between Realism and Impressionism, Vokey's work combines a skillfully drawn sense of space with softly rendered light effects. The result is a collection of paintings that transport the viewer to the very instance of observation, infused with all the visual poetry of a fleeting moment in time.
A painter proudly working in the Boston School tradition, Sam Vokey's classical training and current practice emphasize the importance of working directly from life and in natural light. Like his predecessors, he is constantly seeking the "truth" to be found in the visible world around us. His bright landscapes, created in layers over many days, gradually reveal both the form and feeling of the moment and elevate familiar scenes to the level of poetry. Speaking of his process, Vokey expounds, "I'm always trying to capture a moment in time, a certain light that is only present for a fleeting moment. The transitory becomes the subject as everything in my view is constantly changing - the moving light, the weather, the seasons." Fresh, immediate, and somehow wonderfully timeless in the same stroke, Vokey's paintings bring audiences into both visual and spiritual communion with nature. The artist's lofty goal in the speed and chaos of an increasingly digital world is "a painting that instills in me, and my viewers, the consciousness I experienced while being in that particular place and time in nature; the transcending beauty and inner peace to be found in the 'here and now'."
