Join us for a dynamic exchange between artist Sarah Jacobs and University of Pittsburgh professor Paolo Palmieri as they bridge cosmic imagery and intellectual history. The talk, together with Jacobs's solo exhibition "It's Not What it Seems," invites audiences to consider how ancient metaphysical ideas continue to shape how we see, think, and create today. Sarah Jacobs is a contemporary artist whose works express the joy, complexity, and entanglements of being alive by depicting the things that make life good in surrealist compositions. Through her multimedia paintings she navigates the nature of the self and its place in the universe.
Paolo Palmieri (Associate Professor of History and Philosophy of Science) focuses on the traditions that shaped the values of modernity, particularly science and philosophy and the fine arts, over a period spanning the late middle ages to the twentieth century. Beyond that, he is an experimental musician who builds his music instruments and an artist of sorts in different media.
