Special Announcement - There is a great exhibition on view through February 28, 2025 at the Brant Foundation: KENNY SCHARF.
You might have heard his name lately because Scarf is one of the great contemporary artists who participated in the Luna Luna Amusement Park that is currently on view at the Shed in Hudson Yards. In 1987, he created a mechanical swing carousel completely covered with the artist's signature characters. Also in the 1980s, he was a graduate of School of Visual Arts and a leader of the East Village art scene (where the Brandt Foundation stands today!) Kenny Scharf is one of the few art stars of the 80s who is still alive and working (some, like Keith Haring and J-M Basquiat passed away at a very young age). Through the decades, Scharf has experimented with painting, sculptures, installation, video, street art and more. In this exhibition, visitors can get a comprehensive look at the artist and his work.
What words have been used to describe Scharf's style? Think colorful, pop-surrealistc, graffiti street style, space-age, pop-culture, cosmic, cartoonish, science/fantasy, superheroes, vibrant, playful and chock full of imagination.

The Brandt Foundation is located at 421 East 6th Street in a renovated century-old Con Ed substation building. In the mid-80s, the building was the home and studio of famed artist Walter De Maria. Art collector Peter Brandt later bought the building after the De Maria died in 2013 for $27 million. I’ve attended a few exhibitions there over the years, including its incredible inaugural exhibition of J-M Basquiat’s work.

If you haven’t yet seen the Brandt Foundation gallery space, you will surely be impressed by its size and design. It's so much fun to see how the original industrial design elements blend beautifully with contemporary art on display. Come and get the Brandt Foundation/Kenny Scharf experience with Artful Buzz!
