Solo performance for Putin’s organ
Mazen Kerbaj is een Libanese kunstenaar, componist en trompettist, gevestigd in Berlijn. Hij staat bekend om zijn experimentele trompet-improvisaties, waarbij hij het klassieke instrument transformeert met objecten, alternatieve mondstukken en percussieve elementen. Op Artefact Sound brengt hij de Belgische première van zijn nieuwe performance Lungless, een indringende compositie waarin hij teruggrijpt op pijnlijke jeugdherinneringen aan de Libanese burgeroorlog. De titel Lungless (letterlijk: "zonder longen") verwijst naar het onvermogen om te spreken in tijden van oorlogsgeweld. Ook verwijst het naar zijn zelfgebouwd instrument met zes trompetten, dat niet via Kerbajs adem, maar door een luchtcompressor wordt aangedreven. Hij noemt het instrument ook wel Putin’s Organ, een directe verwijzing naar de oorlogen van vandaag, met name Oekraïne en Gaza.

Mazen Kerbaj is a Lebanese artist, composer and trumpeter based in Berlin. He is known for his experimental trumpet improvisations, in which he transforms the classical instrument with objects, alternative mouthpieces and percussive elements. At Artefact Sound, he will present the Belgian premiere of his new performance Lungless, an intriguing composition in which he draws on painful childhood memories of the Lebanese civil war. The title Lungless refers to the inability to speak in the face of war’s violence. It also refers to his self-built instrument with six trumpets, which is powered not by Kerbaj's breath, but by an air compressor. He also calls the instrument ‘Putin's Organ’, a direct reference to today's wars, particularly in Ukraine and Gaza.

Marta Salogni is een echte superster in de wereld van de muziekproductie. De in Londen wonende Italiaanse mixte in haar Studio Zona al artiesten als - hou u vast - Gorillaz, Depeche Mode, Björk, Bon Iver, Black Midi, Animal Collective, Holly Herndon en M.I.A. Naast producer is Salogni ook zelf componist en improvisator. Live brengt ze haar muziek tot leven met behulp van analoge tape machines en instrumenten, waarbij ze loops, feedback en echo's creëert. Dit doet ze solo, in duo met Valentina Magaletti en Tom Relleen, of met haar band Melos Kalpa. Voor het slotconcert van Artefact Sound zal ze voor de eerste keer solo in België spelen met vier tape machines.

Based in London, the Italian artist has mixed in her Studio Zona with artists such as Gorillaz, Depeche Mode, Björk, Bon Iver, Black Midi, Animal Collective, Holly Herndon, and M.I.A. In addition to being a producer, Salogni is also a composer and improviser. She brings her music to life live using analog tape machines and instruments, creating loops, feedback, and echoes. She does this solo, in a duo with Valentina Magaletti and Tom Relleen, or with her band Melos Kalpa. For the closing concert of Artefact Sound, she will play solo in Belgium for the first time with four tape machines.
