Learn to make a woven cedar bark bookmark with Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) weaver and educator Alice Guss (Tsawaysia Spukwus) in this intimate workshop. Alice will start with a welcome song, an opening circle, and share some traditional drumming and singing. She will guide attendees through the cultural importance of cedar while working on their bookmarks.
All materials provided. Ages 8 and up. Each participant will receive a weaving kit with materials to create her/his own cedar bark bookmark.
About the presenter:
Tsawaysia Spukwus (Alice Guss) is a Squamish Nation member, born and raised in Squamish, BC. With over 20 years working with First Nations communities as a Director of Education and 20 years delivering workshops on drum making, wool weaving, cedar bark, plant walks and traditional medicine, Tsawaysia is masterful at bringing innovative learning opportunities to all people through workshops, drumming, singing, dancing and storytelling. She is currently an Indigenous cultural programmer at the Museum of North Vancouver.
