Location: Marisa Newman Projects,
38 West 32nd Street, Suite 1602, New York, NY 10001
What to expect: Borshch of Art invites you to an artist talk and exhibition tour of the Adriana Farmiga: Index at Marisa Newman Projects. You will have a chance to see Farmiga’s art and participate in a Q&A with the artist.
At the center of the exhibition is a sculptural installation of ambiguous plywood forms. Originating from run-of-the-mill children’s crafting masks of characters like princesses and pirates, Farmiga broadens the scope of these abstracted icons to include the forms of an emoji keyboard.
In this exhibition the artist investigates what it means to live in a current world full of digital solutions that simplify the exchanges. They might help with efficiency of business exchanges like with electronic document signing but at the same time we experience a negative impact on interpersonal dynamics. Like with the emojis that might hide the true feelings and oversimplified expressions and distract from raw honest conversations.
Adriana Farmiga (b. 1974, Rosendale, NY) is a New York-based multidisciplinary artist, a first generation Ukrainian American, and educator. Farmiga is a faculty member and Dean of Cooper Union’s School of Art, she received a MFA in 2004 from Milton Avery School of the Arts, Bard College and BFA in 1996 from The Cooper Union School of Art.
Often combining elements of still life and assemblage, Farmiga’s work gives heed to the handmade coexisting alongside the manufactured. Her drawings and mixed-media sculptures aim to uncover hidden or overlooked relationships between seemingly disparate subjects. Key to her thinking is a hope for shifting perceptions in relation and otherness.
Farmiga’s work was recently exhibited at the Untitled art fair in Miami, FL; Dorsky Museum, New Paltz, NY; Morgan Lehman Gallery, New York, NY; and MOTHER Gallery, Beacon, NY. She was a recent recipient of Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, MacDowell Fellowship and participated in various residencies including Art Omi.
