Duration: 45 min including Q&A
Join Alice Rezende, Curatorial Assistant, Australian Art, for a talk focused on renowned Australian painter, Roy de Maistre (1894–1968).
De Maistre’s long-lasting interest in colour can be traced back to the many art worlds – including those of music and interior design – which he so deeply inhabited. His experimental ideas led him to develop a theory of ‘colour/music’ which assigned colours to notes on the musical scale, culminating in the groundbreaking 1919 exhibition Colour in Art, along his close friend Roland Wakelin.
In this talk, Alice will explore how de Maistre’s formative life experiences and collaborations with members of fashionable modernist circles informed his colour sensibilities, and how his social flair, in turn, informed his own artistic practice.
Art Talks is a free weekly program. Hear from artists, curators and experts on the works in our collection and exhibition program.
This program is wheelchair accessible and four assistive listening devices will be available for attendees who are hard of hearing. Please email [email protected] for more information.
