Birds of America: Exploring the Art of John James Audubon, Winter Bird Migration, & the Annual Christmas Bird Count with the Audubon Society
About this Event

The Miller Special Collections Room at the Billie Jean King Main Library is pleased to announce our next in-person program entitled, "Birds of America: Exploring the Art of John James Audubon, Winter Bird Migrations, & the Annual Christmas Bird Count with the National Audubon Society." Join us on Saturday, December 4 from 3 - 4:45PM for this two-part event -- combining our newly launched Art History Film Series with our Art of Nature Lecture Series!

This program will begin with a documentary film featuring the life and art of John James Audubon (1785-1851). Audubon's interests in art, ornithology, and natural history turned into a plan to make a complete pictorial record of all the bird species of North America in his groundbreaking artistic work, The Birds of America. He also wrote and documented many observations about nature, the American wilderness, and his concerns with the country's quickly changing and disappearing natural landscapes. His art, writing, and fame increased public awareness on these topics and helped pave the way for the birth of the American conservation movement in the United States.

After the film, we'll continue with our Art of Nature Lecture Series talk, presented by Mary Parsell, president of the El Dorado chapter of the National Audubon Society here in Long Beach. This presentation will delve further into how Audubon's artistic legacy led to the development of the modern-day National Audubon Society, established many years after his death in 1905. We'll explore the Audubon Society's mission of bird conservation, the growth of local chapters across the country (like El Dorado Audubon), and how public education efforts and scientific research projects further this mission. Learn more about local area winter bird migrations, bird identification, and citizen science-related activities (like the Annual Christmas Bird Count) that the public can participate in around Long Beach.

This event will take place in Meeting Room A (on the 1st floor of the Billie Jean King Main Library) and will have limited seating, so registration is required to attend.

The Billie Jean King Main Library is located at 200 W. Broadway, on the corner of Broadway and Pacific. Library parking is available in the structure at Broadway & Chestnut Avenue. With library validation, parking is free for the first 30 minutes and $1.75 for 2 hours; daily maximum is $12.
