Artist in The Garden is an exhibition that embraces the observations and experimentation of Delaware artist, Susan Benarcik, as a nature enthusiast. This exhibition is the most telling of Susan’s process and philosophy, which is to document, postulate and sometimes wax poetic on things that intrigue her. Captivated by nature’s ingenuity and persistence, Susan finds inspiration in nature’s beauty in the woods, along the coast, in greenhouses, and on sidewalks. Susan incorporates nature’s colors, textures, and forms, using natural materials, collected ephemera, and gouache to create sculptures, collages, and paintings.
Susan graduated with a master’s degree in printmaking and has been awarded multiple fellowships and awards throughout her career. Since relocating to Delaware, the artist has received an Established Artist Grant from Delaware Division of the Arts, and as a founding board member of the Jester Artspace, aims to bolster creativity in the Brandywine Hundred. “For as long as I can remember, observation and experimentation have been my métier. Because my parents owned their own creative industries, I have been continually and inescapably surrounded by skilled artisans, designers, and their materials. It is in these special places where I developed my unique skills founded in observation and experimentation.”
