I am a digital artist based in Geneva, working primarily with what I define as psychodynamic photography — a mobile-first, emotionally charged approach to lens-based image-making. My practice is rooted in the transformation of fleeting, everyday moments into richly layered digital compositions that evoke inner states, memories, and subconscious tension. Using only my smartphone and in-app editing tools, I reframe photography as a form of psychological mapping — intuitive, abstract, and affectively resonant.

In this presentation, I would like to share a selection of my recent works and open a conversation around psychodynamic visual strategies, mobile digital tools, and the intersection of photography with contemporary emotional life. I’ll reflect on how editing becomes a performative, introspective gesture and how digital manipulation allows me to access poetic and symbolic layers of experience beyond the literal image.

As a former photography student turned digital artist, my work also raises questions about access, experimentation, and creative autonomy — themes that I believe resonate with Art Lab’s ethos of inclusivity and critical dialogue.

Carl Hopkins

Carl discovered his passion for art at a young age, spending his childhood sketching and experimenting with creative expression.
After studying graphics for three years, he further developed his skills through life drawing sessions, which deepened his appreciation for form and detail.
After a hiatus, Carl returned to art nearly decade ago, beginning with grayscale portraits. His artistic journey expanded into vibrant colour portraits, charcoal works, and intricate ink drawings—his favourite medium.
Over the years, Carl has cultivated a distinctive style that goes beyond traditional artistry. His gentle touch and remarkable patience enable him to create more than just art—he breathes life into every piece he crafts.
This is especially evident in his mastery of black-and-white media, where his pencils and fine art ink pens transform simple materials into works of extraordinary vitality.
Carl’s art captures not only the form but also the essence of his subjects, making each creation a testament to his passion and dedication.
