Art in the Form of Film: Edward Scissorhands (1990)December 19, 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Tim Burton’s 1990 gothic fantasy “Edward Scissorhands” is an offbeat Christmas movie, perfect for the season. It’s the story of a story from many years earlier, told by grandmother to granddaughter, of kind, young Edward (Johnny Depp), who had scissors for hands. The town he lived in, at first, was nice to him, and in return he pruned all of their hedges into topiaries. But later, the town turns against him, treating him like a freak, a Frankenstein monster of sorts. Wynona Rider plays Kim, Edward’s love interest, and the great cast includes Vincent Price, Dianne Wiest, Alan Arkin and others. Released before Depp’s superstardom on a budget of $20 million, it earned more than four times that amount at the box office. This beloved masterpiece was nominated for the Best Makeup Oscar in 1991 at the 90th Academy Awards, but lost to the now mostly forgotten Dick Tracy. Paul Marino will introduce the film, raise questions to ponder, and host a post-viewing discussion.
