Join us this July to hear acclaimed art history lecturer, Stella Grace Lyons’s talk about Matisse.
Matisse changed the course of the visual arts in the 20th Century.
His subjects were surprisingly conventional: he painted landscapes, figurative works, and portraits. But it was his treatment of these themes that made him radical.
Matisse used intense, eye-popping colours and curving, sensuous lines – an approach that brought him notoriety as one of the ‘Fauves’, or ‘wild beasts’.
This talk will focus on his key paintings, with a particular emphasis on his Fauvist period.
Come and experience the joy, energy, and vivid colours of this modern master!
'Without sacrificing scholarship, Stella Grace Lyons has a most engaging way of hooking an audience into sharing her passionate interest in art history, drawing three dimensional human stories and experiences from the two-dimensional canvas'
- Maev Kennedy, Guardian Arts Correspondent
Following the talk, please stay for tea and delicious homemade cake, served in our beautiful Gallery.

Ymunwch â ni ym mis Gorffennaf i glywed y darlithydd hanes celf o fri, Stella Grace Lyons, yn sôn am Matisse.
Newidiodd Matisse lwybr y celfyddydau gweledol yn yr 20fed ganrif.
Roedd ei gynnwys yn syndod o gonfensiynol: paentiodd dirluniau, gweithiau trosiadol a phortreadau. Ond ei driniaeth o'r themâu hyn a'i gwnaeth yn radical.
Roedd Matisse yn defnyddio lliwiau dwys, trawiadol a llinellau crymion, synhwyrus – dull a’i wnaeth yn enwog fel un o'r 'Ffofyddion', neu 'fwystfilod gwyllt'.
Bydd y sgwrs hon yn canolbwyntio ar ei ddarluniau allweddol, gyda phwyslais arbennig ar ei gyfnod Ffofyddol.
Dewch i brofi llawenydd, egni a lliwiau afieithus y meistr modern hwn!
‘Heb aberthu ysgolheictod, mae Stella Grace Lyons yn defnyddio dull deniadol o ennyn diddordeb cynulleidfa i rannu ei brwdfrydedd dros hanes celf, gan dynnu straeon a phrofiadau dynol tri dimensiwn allan o’r cynfas dau ddimensiwn’
- Maev Kennedy, Gohebydd Celfyddydau The Guardian
Yn dilyn y sgwrs, arhoswch i gael te a chacen gartref flasus, wedi eu gweini yn ein Horiel hardd.
