A fascinating and inspiring walk: telling the stories that brings urban history and architecture to life.
About this Event

For some time Art Hike and KIN Walks have undertaken their own separate walks around Sheffield and further afield. As the aims of the groups align, this one-off collaboration creates an opportunity to connect with new people and enjoy this interesting urban setting. It will be led by artist, outdoor expedition leader and forest school teacher Robin Widdowson and local historian and founder of Kelham Island Walks, Anders Hanson.

Starting outside Sheffield Cathedral this walk traverses the city centre to discover some hidden gems and some familiar icons, each has a story to tell and each has contributed to the historical journey of the city.

From Campo Lane to Paradise Square, Tudor Square to the Peace Gardens, Barker's Pool and West Street, these buildings help to illustrate how the city has grown, been used for many purposes and encompassed so many different people: a fascinating insight to the city’s character.

The walk will also incorporate a couple of architecture related simple creative activities for those who want to take part. We will supply some art materials.

Join us for an experience of art, architecture and heritage with like-minded people.

The walk starts in front of the Cathedral. The distance is around 6.5km / 4 miles. The walk will be entirely on urban roads and pavements, with a mixture of tarmac, paving and cobbles.

About Art Hike and KIN Walks

The aims of Art Hike are to make new connections, encourage collaborations, exchange ideas and to simply have a really good day out away from our busy work lives: Join the Art Hike Facebook Group.

KIN Walks original aim was to introduce people in Kelham Island and Neepsend (hence the name) to parts of the city and surrounding areas they might not discover otherwise. The walks are open to anyone, no matter where you live, with the other KIN, as in friendship and community, equally important.

We usually finish off with an opportunity for a drink in a decent pub.

Like our Facebook page to get updates about other walks we are organising, add your images and comments.

What to bring with you

Refreshments and packed lunch, plenty of water, and some money or a card to pay for any refreshments you may want to get. We will stop for lunch en-route, although this may not be near a shop, and so please bring your own food with you.

Depending on the weather, we also recommend bringing along warm and waterproof clothing and a hat, or suncream if it's hot. No one can predict the weather. If you are responsible for others, please ensure that they are suitably dressed.

Please note: you will be solely responsible for your own safety. We accept no responsibility for any loss, injury or illness resulting in joining the walk; however we are insured and Robin is trained in First Aid and will carry a first aid kit.
