Celebrating Birthday & Legacy Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers Art Blakey aka Buhaina (October 11, 1919 – October 16, 1990) born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From the late-30's-40's Art was one of the drummers of choice for the likes of Mary Lou Williams, Fletcher Henderson, Billy Eckstine, Fats Navarro, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon and Sarah Vaughan among others before starting what would become one of the most important jazz ensembles and developmental environments for many of the most influential jazz musicians in the history of jazz. The likes of: Clifford Brown, Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, Cedar Walton, Reggie Workman, Wynton Marsalis, Benny Golson, Jon Hendricks, Chuck Mangione, Robin Eubanks, Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner, Hank Mobley, is a small list of Jazz Messengers. Many of the composers in the bands have penned what have become some of the greatest jazz standards. But a BIG part of why these tunes have flourished is in great part to the direction, leadership and sometimes arranging by Art Blakey. Come celebrate and witness the legacy of the music of Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers.
