Get set for the school of rock these summer holidays when the Art Gallery of Ballarat presents a snackable program of Art Bites for ages 6 to 12.
Kids can explore the history of the guitar through art design shapes and patterns and paint a guitar on canvas under the guidance of artist Pauline O’Shannessy Dowling.
Weird and whacky riffs are part of the palette with Emily Van Der Molen’s Bizarre Guitars sessions where children can bring their wildest guitar creations to life using cardboard.
Art Bites is designed for curious and creative kids taking place at the Art Gallery of Ballarat across four sessions in January and alongside the popular Medieval to Metal: The art & evolution of the guitar exhibition.

Guitars in Art with Pauline O’Shannessy Dowling
14 & 16 January 10 am – 12 noon
For ages 6 - 12
Throughout history music has inspired artists. In this workshop children will explore the Medieval to Metal: the art & evolution of the guitar then return to the art room to be immersed in guitar music and encouraged to visualise the kinds of colours shapes and patterns the music inspires in them. They will then make a painting of a guitar on canvas that represents what they imagined.
Bizarre Guitars with Emily Van Der Molen
21 & 23 January 10 am – 12 noon
For ages 6 - 12
What is the weirdest guitar you can imagine? After exploring guitars through history on a tour of Medieval to Metal: the art & evolution of the guitar children will combine cardboard construction with their wildest imaginations to make a life-sized bizarre guitar.
