Saturday 7 December
10-11am | Karakia with John Maihi
The weekend begins with a karakia, setting the tone for reflection and celebration.
12-1pm | Talk: Who Designed the Sarjeant Gallery?
Heritage architect Chris Cochran and Pete Gray explore the figures behind the design of the Sarjeant Gallery, from benefactors and politicians to architects and builders. The talk will also delve into the controversies surrounding the original design competition.
2-3pm | Artist Kōrero: Alexis Neal
Join Sarjeant Gallery curators for a conversation with artist Alexis Neal (Ngāti Awa & Te Ātiawa) as she discusses her solo project, Holding Space. This kōrero will take place in Te Pātaka o Tā Te Atawhai Archie John Taiaroa.
3-4pm | Documentary Screening: Waka Huia – Sir Archie Taiaroa
This documentary celebrates the life and legacy of Sir Archie Taiaroa, exploring his work across diverse fields including Māori welfare, arts, and politics.
5.30-7.00 PM | Inaugural Bill Milbank Memorial Lecture
Professor Deidre Brown delivers the first lecture in this new annual series, reflecting on Māori arts and architecture within the context of Te Pātaka o Tā Te Atawhai Archie John Taiaroa. The lecture honours the legacy of former Sarjeant Gallery Director Bill Milbank QSO (1948–2023).

Gallery staff provide a tour of the Nō Konei | From Here exhibition, sharing stories about the collection's evolution and key acquisitions since 1901.
1:00-2:00 PM | A Director’s Library: Tribute to Gordon H. Brown
Curator and art historian Dr Linda Tyler offers a tribute to Gordon H. Brown, exploring his contributions to New Zealand art as a painter, librarian, and author. This talk celebrates the opening of the gallery’s research library, named in Brown’s honour.
3:00-4:00 PM | Artist Kōrero: Matthew McIntyre-Wilson
Join Senior Curator & Programmes Manager Greg Donson for a conversation with artist Matthew McIntyre-Wilson (Taranaki, Ngā Māhanga and Titahi) about his post-residency project, held in the gallery’s heritage wing.
