Artists have always found ample reasons to work with the natural world – either as a source of materials: clay, paper, pigment – or as a source of inspiration. However, in light of pressing environmental concerns, many more artists are choosing to work on behalf of the land.Art can provide a “collective language” for making meaning about “interrelated crises,” such as climate change and social injustice. Artists have key roles to play in shaping answers to these concerns.
Artists addressing the health of the planet can utilize emotional appeals for action, improve understanding, and provide the necessary information to address environmental topics.
This panel will be a conversation about this collective language between artists and folks who work directly in environmental programs as educators, scientists, or organizers. Many participants have ties to ARTservancy through the land partnerships or as past ARTservancy resident artists.
