Art and Healing Book Club is a nurturing space dedicated to exploring the transformative power of art through reading and discussion, shared experiences, and creative practice. This club is designed for individuals interested in personal insight and growth, deepening one's art practice, and acquiring new artistic skills, supported in community with like minded others.
We will begin our Fall Book Club group series with the title, "Art Is a Spiritual Path", by artist and Registered Art Therapist, Pat B. Allen.
From the book description:
"Art is a spiritual path—not a religion, but a practice that helps us knit together the ideals and convictions that guide our lives. Creating art can be prayer, ritual, and remembrance of the Divine. And the sharing of this creativity with others in small groups can serve as sanctuary, asylum, ashram, therapy group, think tank, and village square. Pat Allen has developed a reliable guide for walking the path of art through a series of simple practices that combine drawing, painting, and sculpture with journal writing."
Over eight weekly sessions, we will read one chapter on our own, and come together to discuss the topic content, our thoughts/feelings/reactions and insights, and do the chapter art activity together as a group (or create response art to the chapter, as is relevant).
Sessions will be guided by a trained facilitator who will be on hand to moderate the discussion, and be a resource and technical support for art making.
All tools and materials are included (remote learners have the option of purchasing the group series only, and will receive a materials list.)
Books may be purchased separately, and will be available through the Studio Gallery at a discounted price to Book Club members. Alternatively, you may purchase the book separately online through Amazon, or request a copy through your local library.
NOTE FOR REMOTE LEARNERS: If purchasing with book and materials, please register at least 1-2 weeks prior to the start of group to ensure you receive your materials on time!
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Serena Appel is an artist, writer, Registered Art Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor. She is the founder of Serene Abundance Studio Space, runs her own private practice, and leads creative workshops, activities and presentations.
