About this Event

Embracing Connection: Transforming Loneliness Into a Flourishing Community

Join Arlington County as we welcome former U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy for a powerful National Recovery Month event exploring the epidemic of loneliness and its deep ties to physical health, mental wellness, and substance use recovery. This inspiring conversation will highlight how fostering connection can transform communities, support healing, and build resilience in the face of isolation.

Together, we’ll explore actionable strategies to create a more connected, compassionate, and flourishing Arlington.

About Dr. Vivek Murthy

Dr. Murthy is a physician, best-selling author, and the 19th and 21st Surgeon General of the United States. He has led groundbreaking initiatives on mental health, workplace well-being, and the impact of technology on health, and served as co-chair of the White House COVID-19 Task Force.

His 2023 Surgeon General’s Report on the Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation sparked a national conversation about the importance of social health and its influence on recovery, resilience, and community well-being.

Dr. Murthy is also the author of Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World and host of the podcast House Calls with Dr. Vivek Murthy. His innovative programs—like Songs for Hope and Recipes for Connection—promote healing through the arts and shared experiences.
