HIS Dance Ensemble proudly announces the return of its original ballet, ARK, to be performed on Saturday, March 7, 2026, with shows at 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm at The DeVos Center for Arts and Worship located at Grand Rapids Christian High School.New this year is the introduction of Noah, portrayed by acclaimed guest artist Seyong Kim, whose performance brings added depth and dimension to the production. Kim is an internationally recognized choreographer, performer, and Associate Professor of Dance at Western Michigan University. As a respected scholar and educator, he is known for his leadership in cross-cultural dance studies and artistic excellence. His choreography has been showcased worldwide across Europe, Asia, North America, and the Middle East. He has performed with multiple ballet companies and organizations across the country, including the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center.
ARK is a dance production blending classical ballet with creative storytelling inspired by Genesis 8:1, “But God remembered Noah”, told through the perspective of the animals, the ballet follows the animal’s journey as they face uncertainty, separation, and the power of the flood. Audiences are immersed into the story with innovative choreography, professional lighting, and creative sets and costumes.
“Anchored by the theme “He remembers” ARK is a powerful reminder that God is present in the waiting, faithful through the storm, and true to His promises.” Co-Director Sarah Walters
In 2014, ARK was created by Tassia Johnson and Hannah Sullivan with choreographer Sarah Powell. This season ARK is being restaged by current directors, Tassia Johnson and Sarah Walters. The production features original opening and closing music created by local musicians Patrick Johnson and Jimmy Schultz, along with Detroit-based artist Kenny Watson. Their powerful music beautifully frames the journey from chaos to promise.
Thanks to the generosity of our performance sponsors, HIS Dance Academy will invite more than 200 guests from local nonprofit social service organizations to Friday’s Community Night Special Event. This evening includes an opportunity to meet and ask questions with the directors and dancers. We believe that everyone should have access to the beauty of the arts. By inviting members of our community to join us for ARK, we hope to make a lasting impact and create an opportunity for shared experience and inspiration.
