ARIZONA EXPRESSIONS: Artworks from the Hispanic Research Center

This exhibition, a collaboration between the ASU Hispanic Research Center and

Gateway Community College, showcases the works of seven prolific and dynamic

Hispanic/Chicano/a artists who have either been born in Arizona or have spent a

significant portion of their lives in the state. These artists have created a body of work

that not only reflects their individual backgrounds but also captures key moments in

their personal journeys. Each piece is deeply influenced by the unique landscape, rich

history, and cultural diversity that Arizona offers, providing a window into how the state’s

environment and communities have shaped their creative expression. The artworks

featured in this exhibit have been carefully curated from the Hispanic Research Center’s

dynamic and expansive collection.

At the heart of this exhibition is the recognition of the growing influence and

presence of Hispanic/Chicano/a artists in the United States. Over the years, these

artists have made significant contributions to the American cultural landscape, offering

fresh perspectives and enriching the artistic dialogue with their unique experiences and

heritage. Their work not only speaks to their individual stories but also reflects broader

social and cultural themes, making their art relevant both locally and nationally.

The Hispanic Research Center (HRC) at Arizona State University (ASU) has long

understood the importance of honoring and preserving the legacy of Hispanic/Chicano/a

artists. We believe it is our responsibility to document, preserve, and celebrate the work

of these talented artists to ensure their stories are remembered and appreciated.
