About this Event

Aristodimos Kaldis (1899-1979) was possessed of an out-sized personality and vocal left-wing politics and was known artistically for his lyrical, colorful, abstracted visions of his native Greek countryside. New York Times Art Critic Hilton Kramer was particularly enamored of his work and commented on his last one-man show at the Kornblee Gallery: “At the age of 78, Aristodimos Kaldis remains a vigorous and lyrical painter, still passionately attached to his native Greek landscape and its brilliant ‘white’ light, and to the painterly medium in which he distills his memories of this landscape with so much poetry.” Kaldis was a charter member of The Club, the so-called New York School of artists which included De Kooning, Gorky, Kline, Paul Resika, Mary Abbott, and Adolph Gottlieb. He was the recipient of two Guggenheim Fellowships, showed at the Whitney and Museum of Modern Art, and his work is in the collections of the Barnes Foundation and the Guggenheim, among other galleries.

The exhibition of paintings in the Gallery is concurrent with the exhibition of sculpture by Jerry the Marble Faun (Jerry Torre) in St Benedict's Courtyard.

Gerry will be present at the opening, as will Guy Kaldis, son of Aristodimos Kaldis.

The opening reception runs form 6pm to 8pm. It is open to those who are fully vaccinated and also to unvaccinated people who can show a negative Covid-19 test dated 2 or 3 August.

The exhibition runs through the month of August and the Gallery is normally open from 11am to 3pm Monday through Thursday.
