Are you aged 16-25 and interested in architecture and design? Join us for this exciting 7-day workshop (18-19 & 25-29 May).
About this Event

What would the Barking Creek Flood Barrier look like if it was designed today?

It was 1983 the last time someone designed a flood structure in Barking, resulting in the Barking Creek Flood Barrier, a concrete monolith looming over the River Roding. Now, over four decades later, we take a fresh look.

Create London are looking for local 16-25 year olds interested in architecture and design to join this exciting 7-day workshop. Absolutely no experience required.

As part of a cohort of local young people and architecture students, you will be led through design and experimentation phases through to the fabrication and assembly of a temporary large-scale flood structure. The structure will use local sustainable materials, such as reeds from the waters edge in Barking Riverside, and will be built on-site at A House for Artists in Barking town centre. Visitors will be able to come and see the completed structure throughout the month of June, where it will be used to spark conversations about climate change, our industrial heritage and flood risk in the area.

The workshop is led by design and research practice Material Cultures, alongside acclaimed Pakistani architect Yasmeen Lari, known as Pakistan’s first female architect. Back in 2011, Lari created a bamboo structure on raised stilts - the Darya Khan Village Women's Centre - to avoid flooding in Pakistan. This groundbreaking project forms the starting point for our workshops. “There’s so much money in disaster relief,” says Lari, “but we need to put much more effort into disaster preparedness.”
