Architecture on Tap with Landscape Architect Ken Saiki--Free Event

Kirk, in his usual renegade fashion has decided to kick off the Architecture on Tap series with NOT an architect. Ken Saiki, is the founder of Saiki Design, Landscape Architects of Madison, Wisconsin. The work of his firm spans over 35 years and has influenced the built environment throughout the State of Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest. Ken would say his company is not business as usual, and that is the key to its success, longevity and presence in the marketplace.
He will speak about his company’s attitude and approach on design, its business philosophy and operations. He can highlight some of its projects, emerging technologies, trends and challenges.
The company’s work spans both public and private sector projects, big to very small and almost always involved interdisciplinary collaboration with other design professionals, architects, engineers, planners, public artists, etc.
A few concepts that might come up.
• Landscape architecture exists at the intersection of nature and people/society. It is about design for people, responsive to and informed by natural systems.
• Urban design, public space, architecture, should be derivative of the place. Place is connected to the past. Place is best understood by its inhabitants.
• Profit driven business practices do not achieve excellence in product. Excellence in product will result in long-term profitability. Profit is construct measured at a moment in time within an arbitrary period.
