SUNDAY: Arcadia Rooftop Cinema slips under the white picket fence and into the void with David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” (1986). A psychosexual fever dream of noir and nightmare, Blue Velvet’s clean lawns, severed ears, and horrors churning beneath American normalcy is Lynch at his most precise and perverse as he directs your faze at the darkness lurking just below the surface. When college student Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) discovers a human ear in a vacant lot, curiosity pulls him into a secret world of violence, desire, and domination. With the help of wide-eyed good girl Sandy Williams (Laura Dern), Jeffrey uncovers a sadomasochistic underworld orbiting lounge singer Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini) and her captor, the monstrously charismatic Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper). The mystery soon becomes a descent into curdled innocence and love cohabitating with terror.
There will be neither Heineken nor Pabst Blue Ribbon when the dream unravels starting 8pm sharp on Jan. 25, but there will be cold drinks, craft beers, cocktails, smoke, snacks, popcorn, and more. Free entry.
