Slip into a shadowy cowl and enter Gotham City with Tim Burton's "Batman" (1989), the film which redefined the superhero genre and the stage for the increasingly grimdark iterations of one of DC's most familiar characters. Inspired by Frank Miller's groundbreaking graphic novel "The Dark Knight," this is a darker, more complex Batman, brilliantly portrayed by Michael Keaton, whose casting surprised many but proved to be a masterstroke. Alongside Keaton, Jack Nicholson delivers an unforgettable performance as the maniacal Joker, creating an iconic villain whose chaotic energy and sinister charisma are perfectly pit against Batman's stoic heroism.
"Batman" begins with the mysterious Batman already established as a guardian of Gotham, striking fear into the hearts of criminals. When the psychopathic Joker emerges from a botched surgery with a permanent grin, he takes control of the city's underworld and launches a campaign of terror that challenges Batman's physical and psychological limits.
Tim Burton's "Batman" was a pivotal moment in cinematic history, launching a series of films that embrace a darker tone, reflecting the complexity and depth of its characters. While Keaton brings a vulnerability and intensity to Bruce Wayne, Nicholson's Joker became the benchmark for the character's portrayals in nearly all future adaptations. On top of all that, there’s a haunting score that’s peak Danny Elfman.
As we stagger today beneath the yoke of endless superhero films, we can look back to 1989, when it all began.
Gotham will get an enema starting at 8pm on April 28. Free entry. Drinks, craft beers, cocktails, smoke, snacks, popcorn available.
