In cooperation with the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC), and the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens (DABG), the City of Dothan will host several activities in celebration of Arbor Day on Thursday, February 20. Arbor Day is a national celebration held each Spring that celebrates the planting, upkeep and preservation of trees. In Alabama, Arbor Day is usually celebrated the last full week of February.Activities on February 20 will include a special tree planting ceremony at the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens at 10:00am. Officials representing the City of Dothan and the Alabama Forestry Commission will be present to welcome guests and provide comments. This year, a Live Oak tree will be planted at the Gardens in honor of all athletic coaches of the Wiregrass Region. Other speakers will include Dan Williams, City of Dothan horticulturist and Josh Cox, girls softball coach at Wicksburg High School.
Immediately following the tree planting ceremony, the Alabama Forestry Commission will hold its annual Tree-Give Away. Several different species of tree seedlings are expected to be given away, while supplies lasts. Visitors are encouraged to stay and enjoy the Garden trails. At 11:00am, AFC forester Ed Lewis will lead a short Tree Identification walk inside the Garden.
The City of Dothan was declared a Tree City, USA over 30 years ago by the Arbor Day Foundation and National Association of State Foresters. To qualify, a city must meet certain standards for care of its urban forest.
No admission will be charged to participate in these Arbor Day activities.
