Tamsin Elliott (microtonal accordian & lever harp) and Tarek Elazhary (oud) explore intriguing parallels and idiosyncrasies of Egyptian Maqam (musical modes, phrases and mood) and English folk traditions in a thrilling fusion of songs, tunes and textures. This performance draws on their debut album, ‘So Far we Have Come’, which was one of The Guardian’s Top Ten Folk Albums of 2023 and nominated at the Songlines Music Awards, alongside new work to be released in autumn 2026.
Traditional material from the Arabic canon includes Palestinian folksong ‘Amy Abu al Fanous’, quarter-tonal muwashshah ‘Jala Man Kad Sawarak’, as well as ‘Telaet ya Mahia Norha’ by Egyptian composer Sayed Darwish. English traditional tunes inclue ‘Barn Elms’, a three-two hornpipe, and ‘Mundesse’ from the Playford manuscripts.
