About this Event

Please note: This event is part of PRS’s Plantstock festival, taking place 4/19 – 4/21.

PRS’s Plantstock welcomes eclectic audio journal Aquarium Drunkard for a live recording of their Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions podcast featuring indie folks punk titans Okkervil River’s Will Sheff in conversation with Sean Howe, author of the instant classic AGENTS OF CHAOS: Thomas King Forçade, High Times, and the Paranoid End of the 1970s, plus a live set by Will Sheff & Band and a selection of shorts & clips!

Howe’s AGENTS OF CHAOS is a time machine that transports the reader directly to the chaotic, funky-smelling center of the paranoid 1970s. The result of almost a decade of sleuthing, Howe’s fascinating book details the true story of Thomas King Forçade, mysterious founder of High Times Magazine, cannabis kingpin, el supremo of the Underground Press Syndicate, Yippie agitator, known drug smuggler, and possible CIA spook!

For this very special live recording of the Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions podcast, this April 20th event (cough) will see Howe in conversation with Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, who will follow this sure-to-be-captivating discussion with a short band set of classic covers from the 70’s horti-counterculture before we all kick back for a secret stash screening of a rare 1973 doc from the grass-stained underground!

ABOUT AGENTS OF CHAOS & SEAN HOWE

Agents of Chaos: The life and times of High Times’ enigmatic founder Thomas King Forçade, an underground newspaper editor and marijuana kingpin who—between police raids, smuggling runs, and outrageous stunts—battled both the US government and fellow radicals.

Assembled from exclusive interviews, archived correspondences, and declassified documents, Agents of Chaos is a tale of attacks on journalism, disinformation campaigns, governmental secrecy, corporatism, and political factionalism. Its triumphs and tragedies mirror the cultural transformations of 1970s America, wrought by forces that continue to clash in the spaces between activism and power.

Sean Howe: Sean Howe is the author of the New York Times bestseller and Eisner Award-winning Marvel Comics: The Untold Story. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Bookforum, Wired, and elsewhere. He lives in upstate New York.

ABOUT WILL SHEFF

Will Sheff is the lead singer and songwriter for the band Okkervil River. His non-musical writing has appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone and McSweeney’s. His debut album under his own name, Nothing Special, was released in 2022. He lives in Los Angeles.
