With so much in the news about Arts Funding, we are going to have a discussion with some of the people recently affected.
About this Event

As many of our friends will know, Glasgow’s Book Festival announced that they couldn’t run the festival this year when Creative Scotland pulled their funding. This was a huge disappointment to many, and generated much discussion on the nature of funding, and the state of the and further afield.

Meanwhile in Edinburgh, the closure of the (along with the Belmont cinema in Aberdeen, and Edinburgh International Film Festival) created shockwaves in 2022. However, there has been better news recently for Edinburgh’s much-loved independent cinema. But there’s much to do before they at 88, Lothian Road.

This month we’re pleased to welcome James Rice who, along with four other intrepid former staff, fought to find funding to save the Filmhouse. James will tell us more about their plans, and how they reached the current position. It’s not all bad news for Aye Write, so we’re glad to have Bob McDevitt come to tell us what’s going on, and future funding plans there.

After this, we’ll throw in a bit of discussion about funding, as we’re sure there’ll be plenty of thoughts and opinions around the room and in Zoom. We’ll be at The Outhouse again, and after the usual drinks reception from 6.30, we’ll livestream the discussion on Zoom at 7pm, lasting around 40 minutes.

How it works...

6.30: Doors Open – drinks reception in the Function Room at the Outhouse

6.50: Open the Zoom meeting (details are emailed to all ticket-holders)

7.00: Welcome, and introduction to Bob and James

7.10: Presentation and Discussion on Funding

7.35: Our own B.B.C. funding appeal!

7.40: Further mingling and blether

It is free to register for all of our events. We invite donations for the glass of wine, or encourage people to buy us a coffee to help fund our work. If you can’t afford to donate, you are still welcome. Our two anthologies are on sale here, and books will be available to purchase on the night. We look forward to seeing you in person or in the zoom-room.

Accessibility Notice

Edinburgh Literary Salon is open to all those with an interest in all aspects of Literature, whether professional or personal, and to all parts of the industry: writers, publishers, booksellers etc. All are welcome, and events have free registration. While we aim to hold some events at accessible venues, our regular salon is in an upstairs room at The Outhouse. For this reason, we aim to livestream most events. If there is a problem accessing zoom, we will do what we can to assist. We strive to ensure adequate audibility, and straightforward registration. We invite positive feedback on how we can improve, even within our limitations as a non-funded organisation. We welcome open conversation.
