Exploring nature connection and photography as a therapy after trauma and illness. For April’s photo social we are welcoming back to the Darkroom Nicola Lewis-Dixon. Nicola's practice-based PhD research project explores the therapeutic potential of both photography and water-based self-portraiture.
Using both analogue and digital waterproof cameras, to document and record her wild swims, has become a method of reclaiming the body – subsequently, animating these still images has become an expression of being alive. Nicola utilises sustainable darkroom techniques and foraged materials that connect to the very land that is healing her. To develop a unique form of practice that visually represents her embodied response post- cervical cancer/ hysterectomy and focuses on the positive healing aspects of this ongoing recovery process. The work also seeks to unpack the political intersections of class, gender and health in relation to her own experiences.
This work follows on from her MA project 'Goosebumps' that has been exhibited and screened nationally.
