About this Event

Learning objectives:

By the end of the one day workshop, delegates will be able to:

 Recompletion of the Medical Appraiser Competency Self-Assessment Tool and action planning to address any remaining knowledge gaps

 Manage an effective appraisal discussion to support professional development, quality improvement and revalidation

 Consider the quality and breadth of supporting information produced by the doctor, ensuring that it covers the whole scope of the doctor’s work

 Describe the role and responsibilities of medical appraiser

 Deal appropriately with minor concerns that do not affect patient safety

 Judge whether the doctor has engaged appropriately in the appraisal process and the review of their whole scope of work


Outline Programme:

Pre-course work:

E-learning module with the following objective; to encourage you to familiarize yourself with the key supporting documentation for revalidation, with particular emphasis on the roles and responsibilities within the process.

Workshop Content:

 Communication Skills: practical questioning skills, utilization of stem questions in the preparation for appraisal. Models for asking questions at different stages of the appraisal interview.

 Postponing or suspending an appraisal

 The skills of delivering feedback using a defined model

 The Appraisal Summary: Note/record taking tips sharing session. Discussion on quality vs. quality and implications.

 Negotiation and agreement of the Personal Development Plan including exercise on the writing of SMART objectives

 Considering ‘Credentialling’ and ‘CESR’ within the PDP

 The sign off process

The cost of this workshop includes the e-learning pre-work.


A light lunch of a cheeseboard and crudités will be provided, along with hot drinks throughout the day.

Bristol Parkway Train station is 2.5 miles away and there is easy access via M5/M4 with ample free parking in front of the building.
